Govt mulling 500 MW power deal with India

Kathmandu, Mar. 17 - Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ held discussions with the ministers concerned about the energy crisis in a meeting on resolving the present energy shortage in the country today.

At the meeting discussions were held on moving forward the process at the political level with India for the purchase and sale of electricity up to 500 Megawatts for enhancing the effectiveness of the hydro-electricity projects currently in operation.

Member of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr. Laxmi Devkota, who participated in the meeting, said matters relating to importing additional electricity from India, implementing the demand management, operating the diesel plants in full capacity and providing subsidies on installation of solar power in the city areas were discussed for alleviating the present electricity crisis.

Dr. Devkota also said discussions were held on installing new diesel plants of up to 50 to 60 Megawatt capacity for getting relief from the present load-shedding and bringing concrete plans for discouraging the trend of companies taking license without constructing the electricity projects.

In the meeting, Secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources, Shankar Prasad Koirala briefed at the meeting about the progress mentioned in the National Electricity Crisis Resolution Action Plan.

The Finance Minister, the Water Resources Minister and the vice-chairman of the NPC were also present in the meeting.

The meeting was coordinated by the Ministry of Water Resources.
